Say No to Online Shopping In recent years, online shopping has become increasingly popular in China. The last decade witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of people opting for online shopping. Some people claim that online shopping can completely replace shopping in retail stores, Given the security and product quality concerns of online shopping, however, l am against shopping online. Firstly, shopping online has proved to be not safe enough. Consumers who buy products online need to provide their private information, such as ID number, personal and credit card details which can be stolen and used fraudulently by skillful crackers and hackers. Furthermore, e-commerce using check and credit cards leaves the clients vulnerable to banking fraud which remains the top security concerns for people when it comes to online shopping. Secondly, the quality of the products bought online cannot be guaranteed. Some functional products such as apparel and electronic devices cannot be tried or tested online. Unlike traditional retail stores, online shops cannot provide you with the chance to check the product's quality before buying them. Online shoppers are worried that the products will not be what they have expected when viewing web pages. It is true that online shopping offers an attractive list of benefits, with the most obvious being the convenience it brings to the shoppers. Nevertheless, due to its security and product quality concerns, I personally hold that online shopping is far from being a good choice for shoppers. The Importance of Experience Should experience be credited with more importance than books as some people claim? Or do books still play a pivotal role in the learning process? Given my personal experience, I agree with the former. Admittedly, students can learn all the necessary principles or theorems through textbooks. And a high-quality book should contain the essence of a certain subject, The importance of books is corroborated by the fact that almost all learning institutions employ textbooks to disseminate knowledge. Nonetheless, one should not belittle the significance of hands-on experience. In some circumstances, experience may count more than books and this trend is gradually gaining ascendancy. It makes sense that employers expect their prospective staff a to acquire some experience so that they do not have to learn from scratch. In addition, it is true to assert that there are a myriad of things which cannot be learned simply by reading a book, The underpinning goal of any education is to impart knowledge and to cultivate the ability to apply the knowledge to a real-life situation.Principles learned from books amount to almost nothing if students cannot use them to solve problems they encounter in their jobs. Finally, it is undeniable that books are a useful device in terms of conveying knowledge; however, the importance of experience should not be underrated either. On balance, I believe that books and experience actually complement each other: knowledge learned through books will be effectively reinforced by the accumulation of experience. The Importance of Daily Exercise I definitely believe that a regular amount of suitable daily exercise is an important factor in maintaining one's health. The focus is on the word “suitable" because a person's age and physical condition can dictate the type and amount of exercise that is appropriate. There is a wide variety of exercise routines available to suit people of all ages and condition but it is wise to seek the advice of a doctor before taking on a fitness program that may not be suitable: The growth of fitness studios in the big cities has made it easier for busy people to work out a program to fit their time schedule. Most of these studios are staffed with competent and qualified professionals who can tailor a fitness program to best suit one’s needs. Some people rely on sport to provide the exercise they need but some sports carry a risk of injury. People who lead a sedentary life that does not involve much physical activity can offset this through isometric exercises. While the professional studios come equipped with all the latest machines and aids, there are plenty of ways a person can get sufficient exercise without incurring the cost associated with studio fees. Walking or riding a bike are excellent sources of providing free exercise but one of the most popular is the regular practice of the Tai Chi movements. In conclusion, daily exercise is important for health and there are many ways to do this which cost little amounts of money. Choose a Job You Love When it comes to choosing a job I believe that one's own interest should be considered as an important criterion. I concede that big cities usually provide more opportunities than smaller cities. And the challenges presented with big cities can also motivate new graduates to adjust to the real competitive world fast. In the same sense, remuneration undeniably would be a major factor as well. However, as far as I am concerned, the decisive factor should be one's interest. People can easily be trapped in a job which does not inspire them. But work can also be a source of infinite pleasure and enjoyment if it intrigues an individual. Furthermore, one is much more likely to obtain achievements by playing to one's strengths. Life would be more meaningful when one endeavours to pursue one's real interests and follow one's heart. Admittedly, it is hard not to be tempted by a high salary. Yet, in the long run, one will come to the realisation that it is shortsighted to exchange one's passion for monetary rewards. In the final analysis, although there are a myriad of factors to be considered before making a decision, from my standpoint, I believe that one should never forgo one's true passion. The Importance of Etiquette When Travelling Abroad Knowing how to behave while travelling abroad is now becoming almost as importantas remembering to pack your passport. I would like to suggest two reasons why this is so. First, it is important to realize that we are not just lone travellers but representatives of our countries. A British tourist who offends Spanish local mores by acting in an impolite manner is also by proxy offending that country. And it is our nationality that will be remembered more than our personal identity. It is often said that "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." which means that tourists should adopt the local customs by behaving as local people do. Second, we should regard ourselves as guests of our host county. The Chinese are famous for being hospitable to "friends from afar" but how would we feel if our guests rewarded that hospitality with outright contempt for our society's civilized past and present by behaving in an uncouth manner. We would be rightly justified in evicting such "friends" from our homes. In conclusion, adopting local customs of etiquette when travelling abroad helps to give foreigners a good impression of our country and reminds us that we are honoured guests who should respect our hosts. The Importance of Adult Education Many people in the workforce are unhappy with their current salaries or career and consider a change or a betterment of their lives through discovering new avenues of industry. Adult education is on the rise. I personally hold that adult education is highly advisable and completely achievable and therefore is highly important. Firstly, adults starting a new or returning to school most often have found within themselves a strengthened desire to succeed. Studies have shown that 80% of adult students graduates as compared to a 50% average graduation rate among traditional students. Furthermore, adults have a bank of knowledge from life or work experience that can contribute to what they will learn in school. This is a fantastic advantage over their younger peers. Adults also view their professors as peers and are less intimidated by them, Last but not least, higher education for the adult is a life-changing experience. Most often, adults go to school to further their education in hopes of salary increases, chances for promotion, or they go to school for change, hoping to enter into a better field or pursue a field that they have a deep-rooted passion for. In conclusion, the importance of having adult education overshadows the difficulties in pursuing your degree later in life. Given that most colleges and universities have tailored their programs to fit adult student's needs and schedules, going back to school for adult education is feasible and highly advisable. The Importance of Traditional Culture With the rapid onset of globalization, there is a danger of standardization where you would find businesses like Starbucks and MacDonald's everywhere replacing local companies and customs. I believe that while people generally, and specifically young people, welcome the new there is great importance in preserving and promoting traditional culture. First, traditional Chinese culture such as martial arts, Peking opera, Chinese calligraphy, tea culture, etc. have long been the common heritage of the Chinese people and have contributed towards a sense of national unity and pride, With the entry of China into the WTO and its emergence as a strong economic and trading force there has been a growing worldwide interest in China's history and culture. To meet this need, the government has set up over 100 Confucius Institutes abroad to showcase China's cultural heritage, Second, the government has recognized the importance of traditional Chinese festivals by shortening the May holidays and reintroducing ancient festivals such as Tomb Sweeping Day,and Dragon Boat Festival, These holidays help to remind people of a need to respect one's ancestors and to remember great heroes of the past. In conclusion, the development of Confucius Institutes abroad and the promotion of traditional Chinese festivals at home have emphasized the growing importance of traditional Chinese culture and its relevance today. Good Sportsmanship Is of Vital Importance Sportsmanship is a great tradition in sports and competitions that means playing clean and handling both victory and defeat with grace, style, and dignity. Today, quite a few athletes lack sportsmanship. I personally hold that good sportsmanship is of vital importance for both the athletes themselves and their offspring. Firstly, practicing good sportsmanship wins respect. When you win, the trick is to be a gracious and generous winner. Good sportsmanship means acknowledging victories without humiliating opponents, being quietly proud of success, and letting victories speak for themselves. Even if you win by a landslide, good sportsmanship means still finding ways to compliment your opponents. By demonstrating your respect to your opponents, you win respect from them too. Secondly, good sportsmanship teaches children how they should behave. Kids learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches. Kids who see adults behave in a sportsmanlike way gradually come to understand that the real winners in sports are those who know how to persevere and to behave with dignity whether they win or lose a game. A child who practices good sportsmanship is likely to carry the respect and appreciation of other people into every other aspect of life. In conclusion, sportsmanship is a manifestation of our own ethics in real life. For the sake of sportsmen themselves and the generation to come, good sportsmanship should be highly advocated. Punctuality Is an Important Virtue To be or not to be punctual is a habit. We often fail to appreciate the influence of habits in our life. The habitual practice of being late is often due to a lack of concern of being on time. In my opinion, being punctual is an important virtue for all of us. Punctuality is essential for people from all walks of life. For students, it is a great blessing. If you are punctual, you leave a good impression on the teachers and classmates who may offer tremendous help in teamwork. In hospitals, punctuality can make all the difference between life and death. On the contrary, an unpunctual person generally causes inconvenience to others. A person who is always late shows selfishness and thoughtlessness, and he is not a person that most people want for a friend. Furthermore, just as Thomas C. Haliburton said,"Punctuality is the soul of business." Lateness is a sign of poor time management skills. When you are late for appointments, meetings or work, you show a lack of respect for other people's time as well as your own. If you want to be a successful businessman, being punctual is particularly important. Failing to arrive on time causes much inconvenience to the business and also to the rest of the staff. The failure to keep up an engagement punctually may mean a setback for the business. To sum up, punctuality being so important in life, it is necessary for everybody to cultivate this habit froth the very beginning. Preventing Earthquake Damage The devastating 8-magnitude Wenchuan earthquake cost at least 70,000 lives, making it the deadliest earthquake to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake. There has been a heated debate concerning how to prevent earthquake damage. In my opinion, improving building quality and constructing earthquake-resistant buildings should be made a top priority. To begin with, improving building quality will greatly reduce the number of buildings collapsing in an earthquake, Building vulnerability is closely linked to the casualty rate in a catastrophic earthquake. The central government estimates that over 7,000 inadequately engineered schoolrooms collapsed in the earthquake. Chinese netizens have since invented a catchphrase"tofu-dreg schoolhouses to mock both the quality and the quantity of these inferior constructions that killed so many school children, Substandard building materials were used in some constructions, constituting a great potential danger to people's lives. Therefore, improving building quality should be put on top of the government's agenda so as to prevent much of the disastrous effects of earthquakes. Secondly, earthquake-resistant buildings can effectively withstand earthquakes. In the Wenchuan earthquake, many people were killed due to the low standard of earthquake-resistant buildings. China has adopted new legislation to enforce proper quake-resistant structures. Hence adopting an advanced quake-proof technique to build high-standard quake-resistant buildings is indispensable to tragedy prevention from earthquakes. In conclusion, improving the design and the quality of buildings is the best way to prevent the tragic effects from earthquakes. Increase Public Transportation Beijing is faced with an uphill battle to improve deteriorating air quality and alleviate traffic jams caused by the surge in car use. What is the best way to decrease the number of private automobiles on the road? In my opinion, developing sustainable public transportation strategies should be given top priority. Firstly, a well-managed and punctual public transportation system makes commuting and travelling easier and more convenient. One big headache for private car drivers is the annoying traffic jams. However, some forms of public transport, such as subway, magnetically levitated train and light rail transit can help commuters and travellers avoid traffic jams, greatly reducing their time wasted on the road. Furthermore, by taking public transport, people will no longer be bothered by looking everywhere for a parking place. Therefore, a service-oriented and user-focused public transportation system will definitely attract more private car owners, keep their cars in the garage and choose public transport. Secondly, public transport serves as an economic alternative to cars. The Chinese government will provide a total of l.3 billion yuan to help Beijing's bus companies reduce fares to only l yuan per ride. The high oil price and auto maintenance cost deter car owners from driving their cars. Since public transport is so cheap, there should be no economic reason to drive a car in the city. In conclusion, public transportation should be given a strategic position in the city's sustainable development planning so as to reduce private car use and ultimately relieve the city's traffic jams. Helping Poor Students Financially Figures from the Ministry of Education indicate that about 2.63 million college students in China suffer from poverty, accounting for 19 percent of the total of 13.5 million students enrolled. Among them, 1.22 million are categorized as "extremely poor" students.Higher education institutes across the country should launch different programmes to provide financial aid to poor college students. The access to financial aid can prevent poor students from dropping out of colleges and universities. Programmes such as “Green Passage" enable poor students to enroll and defer tuition payments. The ministry also encourages poor students to apply for state loans. Ministry figures show that the state loan system, introduced in 2000, has aided 2.07 million unrversity students. Furthermore, part of the tuition fees collected every year by each university should be used to help poor students, for example, by offering scholarships, tuition waivers and work-study programmes under which students help outs in libraries, teachers' offices or service departments to earn money. Last but not least, implementing a programme for the exemption of tuition and textbook fees for rural poor students and subsidies for poor boarding students can also help ease the financial burden of poor students. Statistics show that l.78 million poor students are still in need of financial help, In conclusion, to prevent students from having to abandon their higher studies through financial difficulties, more policies concerning financial aid to poor students need to be mapped out. Communication Is the Key to Having a Good Dormmate Relationship Many students find that living in close quarters with one or more roommates can be stressful and challenging. Common sources of roommate conflict include differences in lifestyle, culture, habits, preferences, values, and activities. In my opinion, communication is the most efficient way to maintain a good relationship with dormmates. Firstly, open and honest communication is the key to building a positive and successful relationship. It is wise to take some time to talk to each other and let your roommates know what is important to you. Talk about how you would like for the four of you to communicate with each other and how you talk to others when there is a problem or conflict. Living together can be stressful and knowing how other people operate means that you can resolve conflicts before they grow too large. Effective communication plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy relationship with roommates. Secondly, people tend to be more open and friendly after smooth communication. Maybe you are anxious and concerned about living with another person. Your roommates may be experiencing the same issues and concerns and may be under the same pressures. Talking to each other about the things that may affect your relationship as roommates is a sign of being open and friendly, making it easier to have a good relationship with dormmates. In conclusion, it is generally important to resolve roommate issues as they come up, rather than neglect them or let them worsen. Communication is the key to coping with the stresses and challenges of living with roommates. Respect. One Another's Differences We hear, but we don't listen. We don't absorb the points being made. What causes this breakdown in communication? It's simply because we have different backgrounds, experiences, and histories. To counter and prevent misunderstanding we need to respect each other's differences. Firstly, our need to be understood and appreciated should be based on the knowledge of other people's differences. We have different points of view, because of our different backgrounds. When you feel yourself disagreeing with someone, ask yourself how his world view differs from yours. Putting yourself in his shoes and trying to understand his point of view, you may be surprised to learn you are in complete agreement. Secondly, the best way to get others to respect your beliefs is by respecting theirs. You may understand their point but still disagree with it. If you opinion is different,of course, you want others to respect your right to disagree. Often disagreements arise, because we focus on the words being used instead of focusing on the speaker. Although we understand these words, we interpret them differently. So it is useful trying to understand and respect the person. To conclude, the way we view the world and interpret events differs. These differences easily lead to conflicts. The first step toward eliminating misunderstanding is to respect other people's differences and beliefs. Solving the Generation Gap Problem Although some generational differences have existed throughout history, during this era differences between the two generations grew significantly in comparison to previous times, particularly with respect to such matters as musical tastes, fashion, culture and politics. The only and most important thing to bridge the generation gap is to stay in communication with frank, honest and open chat. First of all, communication enables young people to understand the older generation better. The younger generation naturally differs in dress, food and habits. They think old people do not fit in the modern world,so they tend not to listen to their counsel. However, older people have more experience and can share their advice with the new generation. Secondly, communication makes it easier for old people to understand the younger generation. Old people are fully convinced of their ideas as ultimate and ideal. They impose their self-righteous attitude on the young, who, however, are becoming rebellious against the central authority of the paternal figure. Teenagers are always talking about their freedom, usually in context of how their parents are obstacles. Therefore, effective communication is vital in order to overcome any difficulties. In conclusion, there always has been a generation gap since the dawn of civilization . More understanding and mutual respect seem to be a good way to narrow the generation gap. Therefore, communication with frank and honest chat is the key to this problem. Increase Public Awareness of Water Pollution Many developing countries are seeing a rapid rise in water pollution so severe that densely crowded cities could be left without adequate safe supplies. As for how to combat water pollution, the most effective way should be by strengthening supervisory policies. Firstly, supervision promotes public awareness of water conservation and protection. Let us take agricultural waste-water as an example. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers are the main contaminants in agricultural production. In fact, farmers are less aware of water conservation compared with more water-conscious urban residents. Therefore, education-oriented supervision should be adopted by the local authorities. Furthermore, tough measures have to be taken against illegal industrial waste-water discharge. Strict standards must be set. Industries which cannot meet certain criteria need to bear legal liability. The government and the public, especially direct interest groups, need to join up supervisors. Mutual supervision between enterprises is also worth consideration under certain circumstances . When it comes to domestic sewage,self-supervision and community publicity may be the answer. For individuals, self-awareness is the most important factor in combating water pollution, which can be acquired through local and national advertising campaigns. In conclusion, the strengthening of supervision serves as an effective solution to water pollution. The government should make unremitting efforts to adopt supervision strategies in an attempt to prevent water pollution. Use Clean Energy Only The world is facing an uphill battle to reduce air pollution which has led to a series of health hazards. In my opinion, the real solution to air pollution is to replace fossil fuels with clean energy like solar and wind energy. Firstly, by utilizing the sun and the wind to produce clean energy, pollution from dirty energy such as fossil fuels can be greatly reduced. The overuse of fossil fuels such as coal has given rise to the emission of pollutants like nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, which are looming as one major threat to air quality. According to the official statistics, carbon dioxide emission reached 18.57 million tons in 1999,posing a serious threat to air quality, Therefore, harnessing solar and wind energy can effectively reduce pollutants emission from fossil fuels and significantly improve air quality. Secondly, renewable forms of energy such as solar and wind energy are non-polluting and environmentally friendly. It is widely acknowledged that solar and wind energy are clean, free and inexhaustible. They provide energy for cooking, lighting, heating and cooling without any direct emissions. In conclusion, to win the battle against air pollution, some urgent measures have to be carried out immediately. Replacing fossil fuels with sustainable clean energy is the top priority. Impose Strict Standards on Industries Some parts of the world face grave soil pollution that jeopardizes the ecology, food safety ,people's health and a sustainable social development. The long-term effect of land pollution has become a cause for concern by the public in general, In my opinion, strict regulations and standards for industry should be adopted in order to prevent land pollution.Firstly, as a matter of fact, industrial pollutants account for more than 80% of the land pollution which is now causing us huge problems in every aspect of our lives. By setting strict standards on industries, we could effectively deter relative factories from producing industrial pollutants. For example, the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro marked a paradigm shift in the attitude of the governments of the world, as 150 delegates attended and recognized the importance of control and discipline. Secondly, when governments make the new standards for those leading industries, and with people in every corner of the world benefiting from it, small business owners and entrepreneurs will also be positively involved and possibly stay engaged with the process of reducing land pollution. To conclude, I am fully convinced by what is argued above that for the sake of ourselves and the generations to come, strict relative relations and standards for industry should be immediately adopted in order to prevent land pollution once and for all. New Technology Is One Way to Solve Noise Pollution There have been an increasing number of complaints and lawsuits about noise pollution in some major world cities. The problem with noise is not only that it is unwanted, but also that it negatively affects human health and well-being. In my opinion, the government should attach importance to the research and application of technology in order to reduce noise pollution. First, the application of sound-absorbing or sound-insulation material shows the quickest sign of the reduction of noise pollution. Noise inside a building can be reduced,if both the external and internal walls are made of sound deadening materials. Heavy and dense materials such as masonry or brick walls are better for sound reduction. The application of sound reduction materials is economically and technically feasible in dealing with four main noise sources, namely transportation, industrial production, construction, and social activities. Furthermore, the introduction of hybrid cars has made advances in the reduction of motor vehicle noise. Noise from transportation is one major source of noise pollution. The application of cars with low level noise will be effective in reducing noise emission. In conclusion, with people exposed to dangerous sound levels on the rise, noise pollution has become a common occupational and environmental hazard. I strongly recommend that the government should spare no efforts in funding and investing in new technologies which will be essential in noise pollution reduction. Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning Will traditional learning institutions like universities ever be supplanted by computer-based education such as distant-learning as some people predict? Personally, I believe that traditional methods of teaching and online learning both have advantages and disadvantages. Some people claim that there are a number of virtues entailed in computer-based learning, For example, students do not have to travel to and fro on a daily basis; instead, they can devote their traveling time to study more. In addition, computers furnish an even richer variety of choices so that pupils do not have to be restrained to study subjects arbitrarily chosen by their universities or teachers. However, others argue that the significance of education carried out in traditional places has stood the test of time. This time-honoured practice should not be eradicated by the advent of the digital era. Furthermore, there are some advantages of traditional education which cannot be challenged by computer-based ones. For instance, at university, each student can receive a tailored education according to his or her aptitude whereas computer-based education inevitably tends to generalize students' collective performance. In summary, on account of the aforementioned points, I believe that traditional methods of learning and online learning have their merits and demerits and that, at the end of the day, it is up to the student to choose his own preferred method of learning. Job Hopping ls Both Good and Bad Job hopping has become a common phenomenon among employees and the concept of an iron rice bowl or jobs for life is falling apart. However, although some employees may favour job hopping, it is by no means favoured by most employers. Most companies spend large amounts of money in training new hires which they see as an investment for the future. To lose trained, qualified and experienced staff early in their careers is financially damaging to companies. Furthermore, employers require loyalty which frequent job hopping by employees shows a distinct lack of. Employers will be reluctant to hire new staff who show this tendency. From the staff’s point of view, it is commonplace for ambitious starters to hop from job to job-part of the process of climbing the career ladder. Furthermore, employees may feel that their current job is dissatisfying or not as rewarding as expected. If so, sooner or later, they will start looking for a different job. In addition, it is very likely that after working in a certain field for some time, one feels like changing one's direction by foraying into another area. In conclusion, both employers and employees have different attitudes towards job hopping. Employers regard it as a financial waste and a sign of disloyalty while employees see it as an opportunity to further their career or to find a job which is more satisfying.
